HP TouchPad Android 2.2.1 System Dump Files Now Available

The HP TouchPad has been getting a lot of attention as of late from the entire developer and Android communities. Once the TouchPad price dropped to $ 99 everyone started running wild with the hopes and dreams of one day soon running Android on said device. Just a day or two later we learned that Android ports were already under way and a few days later one was spotted running Android 2.2.1 out of the box, right from Best Buy.

In case anyone isn’t following the TouchPad Android progress there is also a video clearly showing the HP TouchPad running on Android 2.2.1 FroYo and I’ll post that below. It appears to be a QuIC (Qualcomm Innovation Center) developer unit that somehow managed to get boxed up and sold at Best Buy. Lucky for the entire android world the user was nice enough to get a full system dump of all the files to help out.

Now exclusively over at RootzWiki the files are available for download and the port of Android 2.2, 2.3, and hopefully 3.2 Honeycomb can all get a little head start. We mentioned more on this here once before but the port will be called TouchDroid and the amount of support and developers keeps growing by the day. I have a feeling we will be seeing Android on the HP TouchPad sooner rather than later.

CueThat: Add Any Movie On The Web To Your Netflix Queue

The good people at Big Kitty Labs—a cadre of Central Ohio rapid prototypers whose various projects more resemble real products than prototypes—bring us yet another tool to make life easier…enter CueThat. CueThat is a browser plugin and bookmarklet that allows you to automagically add any movie title you find on the web to your Netflix queue. After you link the plugin to your Netflix account, it takes about 60 seconds or less to sync any new title you highlight and “Cue” with the plugin. It worked fine for me in Chrome browser and even sniffs out duplicates so you can’t add something twice. Bravo!

You may remember these guys from their previous apps like ChumpDump and ParsePlz. I love the way they think quickly and creatively to solve real UX problems in a couple of days instead of a couple of months. This is a great addition to their swiftly increasing number of relevant products.

The Chrome plugin works great!!!

Nokia N950 MeeGo will release 2011

Nokia N950 MeeGo will release 2011, but Nokia did not give details when will the release of N950, which certainly Nokia is still planning to release phones based MeeGo this year.

Nokia MeeGo is the successor of the Nokia 900 and will be renamed the Nokia N950. Nokia said its fidelity not to stop the project MeeGo, Symbian, Qt, and S40.

Nokia N950 has a full-support as a developer platform. From there it can be deduced Nokia N950 seems more intended for developers rather than for a large consumer market. No wonder, because MeeGo initially was targeted for the exploration of long- term market.

The strategy Nokia will also remain focused on the development of Qt for both Symbian and MeeGo. They also are promoting Java on Series 40 Nokia phones so that we can be sure the series will still continue to be produced. Ovi S40 Browser will get a new version that aims to provide a mobile internet connection to hundreds of millions of users.

Apple’s Cook to Woo Shoppers Without Pizazz of IPhone 5

Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) — Apple Inc. this holiday season will have to prove it’s what’s on the inside that matters most.

With its latest iPhone 4S, Apple didn’t tinker with the outside of the device, focusing instead on improving the processor, camera and software interface. The challenge will be persuading shoppers to upgrade to a new product that looks exactly like their old one.

iPhone Developement

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, in his first major product release since taking over for Steve Jobs, is counting on faster speed, voice recognition and the iCloud storage service to make the iPhone a success. The device, Apple’s best-selling product, will face off against an army of fresh smartphones running Google Inc.’s Android, including Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy S II and LG Electronics Inc.’s Thrill 4G.

Apple “didn’t quite understand how revved up expectations had gotten,” said Frank Gillett, an analyst at Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Forrester Research Inc. Some users were looking for a more revolutionary iPhone 5, rather than just a faster iPhone 4, he said. Instead, “Apple is asking people to appreciate and give them credit for a highly engineered and integrated set of products and services.”

Jobs Absent

Cook also has to promote the new iPhone without as much day-to-day assistance from Jobs, whose expertise in marketing and design helped turn Apple into the world’s most valuable technology company. Jobs, who switched from CEO to chairman on Aug. 24, didn’t appear at the unveiling of the iPhone 4S yesterday. The 56-year-old has taken three medical leaves over the past seven years amid a battle with a rare form of cancer.

The success of the iPhone has helped Apple weather market turmoil and the resignation of Jobs, with the shares gaining 17 percent this year. Apple rose $ 5.75, or 1.5 percent, to $ 378.25 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Apple touted the inside changes to the iPhone 4S at yesterday’s event, held at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The A5 chip will make graphics seven times speedier and deliver twice the processing power. The model will cost $ 199, $ 299 and $ 399, depending on features, and will be available from Sprint Nextel Corp. for the first time. Apple already had agreements with AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless.

Motorola Deal

“Inside, it is all new,” said Phil Schiller, a senior vice president in charge of product marketing.

At stake is leadership in the market for smartphones, which is projected to double by 2015, according to IDC. A billion of the handsets will be sold that year, the research firm estimates. While the iPhone is the world’s most popular smartphone, the Android operating system is more widely used by the industry.

Google aims to bolster that position by purchasing its own mobile-phone manufacturer, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. A full redesign under the iPhone 5 banner, along with a revamped iPhone 4, would have given Apple more ammunition to use against Google and its Android partners.

Even so, Apple benefits from more efficient manufacturing by keeping the same body design, Gillett said.

“One thing people don’t understand about Apple is they don’t just change the look for the heck of it,” he said. “They think about it for a very long time.”

Camera Replacement

The iPhone 4S, available Oct. 14, will have a camera that has 60 percent more pixels and can shoot high-definition video. The device also relies on an “intelligent antenna system” that’s designed to improve call quality and works with both CDMA and GSM wireless standards. Users will have up to 8 hours of talk time on one charge.

“For many customers, the iPhone 4S will be the best still camera they’ve ever owned, the best video camera they’ve ever owned, and it’s with them all the time,” Schiller said.

The new voice-recognition system will turn the device into a hands-free personal assistant. The technology lets users check weather, get directions or surf the Web using speech commands. Apple already had basic voice-control abilities on the iPhone for placing a call or accessing a song.

Apple acquired a speech-recognition software company last year called Siri, which helped it develop the new features. The system relies on artificial intelligence to handle users’ questions. The features, combined with the more aggressive prices, will give Apple an edge, said Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, Oregon.

ICloud Release

“Siri is very unique from what I’ve seen and should continue to differentiate them at the high end,” he said.

The older iPhone 4 model will now cost $ 99, and the iPhone 3GS will be free with a wireless contract.

The company also is preparing to release iCloud, which stores pictures, music and other files on Apple’s remote servers. The content can be accessed through iPads, iPhones and Macs via the Internet, and mobile devices no longer have to sync up to a computer. ICloud will debut on Oct. 12.

Voice recognition is emerging as the latest arena for Apple’s rivalry with Google, which has spent years promoting speech technology. Current Google features let users transcribe voice messages to text, ask for turn-by-turn driving directions and perform Web searches based on verbal commands.

Apple’s iPod, meanwhile, remains an important business, Cook said — even as the iPhone cannibalizes some of its sales. As it prepares for the year-end shopping season, the company introduced a new $ 129 version of the iPod Nano and a range of iPod Touch models starting at $ 199.

The iPod, which made its debut 10 years ago, has reached sales of 300 million units globally.

“It took Sony 30 years to sell 220 million Walkman cassette players,” Cook said.

Samsung Nexus Prime Confirmed Twice Today

Every once in a while there’s a day when a device you’ve been waiting for for what seems like an eternity (since the last Nexus device came out, even,) where you get a dash of sand in the face. Today is that day, and it’s happening twice. It’s as if Samsung is saying – look, not only do we have this ultimately awesome device coming out, we’re going to confirm that fact two times today, both times in completely separate manners and both times without so much as a peep as to what this device’s specifications are really going to be. Harsh!

The first appearance of the Nexus Prime today has been a Wi-Fi certification note. While I suppose this does actually give a “peep” as to what this device’s connectivity over Wi-Fi is going to be, every device under the sun essentially has 802.11 a/b/g/n these days. Instead the treat here is the fact that the device (Samsung GT-I9250) is indeed inching nearer and nearer a real life release. You know a device is going to be a big deal when seeing it appear on the Wi-Fi certification page is worth a news bit!

The next appearance comes in the form of an easily faked cease and desist letter apparently handed over to the folks at GEEK – or at least handed over to them by an anonymous source perhaps. This letter appears very much to confirm the existence of the so-called Nexus Prime by calling out the recipient as having illegal possession of data files (in this case the firmware) directly relating to the smartphone in question. Of course, once again, this could very easily have been typed up by any schmo on the street just as easily as it could have been typed up by Samsung, but we can dream, can’t we?

Click thumbnail for full view of supposed letter:

googlenexusprime-CandDnexus-prime-logo-600x592

Is this only the latest in a long line of Ice Cream Sandwich-toting Nexus Prime teasers leaving us wishing for more? Yes, yes indeed.

Motorola DROID Bionic Appears on video giving us a software rundown

In other exciting news this Friday morning we have more of that illusive and hard to find DROID Bionic. No really, this thing has been leaked more than a few times but today we have a pretty in depth video showing all sorts of good stuff for you guys. We saw it on a blurry video a few days ago, but today its clear and gives us a pretty lengthy rundown of the device and software.

This time around we get a nice view of the entire Moto Blur UI changes to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, we see some new live wallpapers, speedtest results and more so I’ll go ahead and drop the video below for everyone to check out.

The leak gives us a nice look at all of the pre-installed applications and in case you guys didn’t notice there seems to be a small bug in the homescreen jump feature clearly shown in the video. We’ve seen recent leaked photos of the Bionic getting OTA updates so maybe they are still making some final touches. This late you’d think all the bugs have been worked out since its been like 4 months or so.

Obviously I’d love an untouched and pure Google 2.3.4 Gingerbread experience but that wont be happening anytime soon. Overall the Blur UI looked pretty impressive and like Motorola is finally getting things down as it was smooth and responsive from watching the video. Here’s the official teaser trailer from Verizon for you guys to check out too.

CBS finally bends, brings some shows to Netflix

CBS today showed a rare willingness to bring its TV shows to a subscription Internet service today and gave Netflix some key content. Classic shows such as Cheers, Star Trek and Twin Peaks will now be viewable through a streaming plan, as will two newer shows, Flashpoint and Medium. The non-exclusive deal lasts for two years and has an option for a two-year renewal.

The deal is a rare branching out for CBS. It has been willing to sell episode downloads through stores such as iTunes but has been reluctant to see any of its video go beyond its own website. The studio is the one holdout from Hulu after ABC/Disney, Fox and NBC all either helped start the site or signed on afterwards.
