Steve Jobs’ Impact Felt Well Beyond Apple

Marc Benioff, founder of the highly successful Salesforce.com, shared with Bloomberg that Steve Jobs has been a very helpful mentor to Benioff and his company — and how he returned the favor by giving Jobs a very generous gift: the App Store trademark and domain name.

John Gruber recently said that Steve Jobs’ greatest creation is Apple itself, but his impact goes well beyond that. Jobs is a mentor to many in Silicon Valley, dispensing advice and guidance to those he deems worthy to receive it.

It was reported in Steven Levy’s book about Google that Steve Jobs agreed to mentor Sergey Brin and Larry Page because he saw their potential — though that relationship broke down when Google launched Android.

Benioff: He has probably given me more help and more advice than just about anybody. When I get in trouble, and when I get lost in my own vision, I’ve been fortunate to go and see him and he’s been able to show me the future a couple times when I got lost in the forest for the trees.

One really good example of that happened in 2003. I went down to talk to him and brought a few members of my executive team. He said something really exciting: “Look, you’ve got a fantastic enterprise application here, but you’ve gotta build an ecosystem.” So, to us, we went back and we’re like “well, we don’t know how to do that.” That was like a Zen koan. How do we build an ecosystem?

So we designed this whole technology that we called “app store” that was the ability to buy these apps and run them in Salesforce. And when we launched it, we called it AppExchange and you can see it at AppExchange.com.

But we liked the App Store name so much that we bought the URL and trademarked it and then I was in the audience when he announced the App Store and I went up to him and I said “I have a gift for you. I’m going to give you the trademark and the URL for the help you gave me in 2003.”

The game, which costs $ 4.99, is available on the Intel AppUp store.

The Intel AppUp store—silly name aside—is just that: an “app store” for Windows PCs.

The game is the Angry Birds you all know and love, but you can’t import any of your scores from the mobile version of the game into the desktop version.

Angry Birds on your phone, Angry Birds on your desktop. All hail Angry Birds!

Goodbye Steve…..

I just didn’t know what to say……

That was my first thought when I got the news (on my iPhone) of Steve Jobs passing. The people who know me also know how I’ve come to respect over recent years Steve, and all of his products that Apple produced. I’m a Senior Windows Systems Engineer, and my world was built around Microsoft. I remember countless debates over the years with other Macheads about who had the better product, or who has the larger impact to the world. I was convinced that the only people who bought Apple products were elitist jerks who thought that they were somehow better because they spent more money on a computer or MP3 player.

Until my now wife bought me an iPod.

I couldn’t believe how elegant it looked, how much music it could hold, and how fast it was. It was simple, and it just worked. I was sure that this would be the only Apple product that I would succumb to, and that Apple really had nothing more to offer me than this. But Steve Jobs changed my thinking, he changed my life and how I do things, he simply changed the world. I realized that Steve Jobs drive to make our lives better was the very reason that changed my mind. It wasn’t about a quick turn of profits or to push Apple’s stock to its highest. It was simply to change the world and how we do things. I realized that if he built a better computer, a better phone, a better tablet, that other companies would have to play catch up and it would push technology. It would make the world better!

Now the owner of several Apple products….. I get it now.

Thank you Steve Jobs!

I will miss you….

Boeing encouraging airlines to switch to iPad navigation charts

Boeing Co. is pitching iPad-based navigation charts to airlines as an alternative to carrying volumes of paper manuals in cockpits as a new generation of pilots that is more comfortable with modern gadgets takes to the skies, a company official said Thursday.

iPad Development

“Everybody’s looking at it (in Asia). Nobody’s yet pulled the trigger, they’re trying to understand the value, trying to close their business case,” Sherry Carbary, the vice president for flight services at Boeing Commercial Aviation Services told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview.

United Continental Holdings Inc. has bought 11,000 units of the device manufactured by Apple Inc. and Alaska Airlines has done away with paper manuals, Carbary said.

Airlines can simply download the application from the iTunes Store of Apple and get instrument charts and airport diagrams from Jeppesen, a Boeing unit, directly on the iPad. Updates will be automatically added to the application, making the process completely paper-less. Jeppesen will offer similar applications for Android devices in the future.

Jeppesen is the world’s biggest navigational information, operations management solutions and flight training products and services provider by number of users. Pilots, ship operators and railway companies use Jeppesen charts and data for navigation.

Carbary, who oversees Boeing’s flight crew, maintenance and cabin safety training as also navigation and crew operations services, said pilots can use the tablet computer in their “down time” while on the flight deck to refresh themselves on the latest updates to manuals or for training.

“From a pilot’s perspective, you can be much more productive because you can not only look at your navigation charts while you are flying … you can go and review your manuals. So, you could actually even do some of your training while you are flying,” she said. “That’s the philosophy and a lot of airlines are looking at it.”

Boeing, which has forecast the global airline industry will need about 460,000 pilots and 650,000 technical staff over the next 20 years, is seeking to do away with paper-based training where possible.

“We’re trying to change from a paper-based training methodology in a classroom. For example the 787 was our first step into all digital. You can actually take it (training material) to your hotel room or home and do some of the training,” Carbary said.
