Will Apple’s Executive Shuffle Bring in New Chief Operating Officer?

With Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook having been elevated to the position of CEO following Steve Jobs’ resignation yesterday, a hole has been left in Apple’s organizational structure. And while Cook has by all accounts deftly handled operational and other day-to-day aspects of Apple’s business during Jobs’ several medical leaves of absence, the company will likely at some point look to bring on a new Chief Operating Officer.

AllThingsD takes a look at the potential moves for Apple, judging current senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams as the most likely candidate. Hinting that Apple may have been beginning to deploy its succession plan as long as a year ago, Williams was promoted to his current position in July 2010 as Apple elevated his previous vice president-level position to an executive-level senior vice president position.

An Apple veteran, Williams has worked closely with Cook for over a decade and overseen some of the company’s major supply chain deals. It was Williams, for example, who orchestrated Apple’s massive flash memory purchase in 2005, one that effectively cornered the market for NAND flash and left rivals scrambling for supply. He’s also credited with leading wordlwide operations for the iPhone since the device first launched.

Williams joined Apple as head of worldwide procurement in 1998, arriving at nearly the same time as Tim Cook following Steve Jobs’ return to the company. In 2004, Williams was promoted to the position of vice president of operations. At the time of his elevation to senior vice president, it was thought that Williams was being groomed to succeed Cook as COO should Cook take on the CEO role. Now that Cook’s promotion has taken place, it seems natural that Williams might step into the COO role at whatever point Apple decides it needs to fill the position.

For its part, Apple hasn’t commented on any potential future organizational changes, but insists that any transitions would be smooth.

Apple spokesperson Katie Cotton stopped short of denying further organization changes down the road, but she did insist the transition will be smooth.

“Apple is not going to change,” Cotton told AllThingsD. “Apple is a company and culture unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.”

Cook himself has expressed similar sentiments to Apple employees, embracing the new opportunity and promising to “stay true” to the culture and vision of Apple.

The highly competitive environment makes mobile apps an innovative and cost-effective way to market products and services. Thus, by investing in mobile application development, companies can take their business ahead of the competition.

Utility and Fun Driven Mobile Application Development

There are many Smartphone brands such as Apple’s iPhone that pamper users with a large number of exciting features and apps. Mobile app stores are a great place to compare prices and buy innumerable apps of your choosing. Therefore, mobile app development covers most phone brands and operating systems. Internet and Mobile Apps Make Smart Phones a Must Have

More recently, telecommunication providers have begun offering internet connectivity as well. Once your Smartphone is connected to the internet, you can access any website as well as their applications. Therefore, businesses need to optimize their existing applications for different types of Smart phones-that is, invest in mobile application development to reach Smartphone users. ‘iPhone 4S’ Casing Resembles iPhone 4 with Some Antenna Changes

Apple has been rumored to be building a new, cheaper iPhone 4 (“iPhone 4S”) alongside the iPhone 5, for an October launch. This iPhone 4S is believed to use different components and less storage to lower manufacturing costs. It appears Apple may have also taken this opportunity to make changes to the antenna design as well.

New “iPhone 4S” part images we’ve received from iPatchiPods suggest that the iPhone 4S will look much like the iPhone 4, but with some notable differences in the frame.

The mid-frame images above show that this so-called iPhone 4S will have two antenna breaks at the bottom of the casing. This differs from both the AT&T (GSM) iPhone 4 and Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4. In AT&T’s iPhone, the antenna breaks are in two spots, along the lower left side and top left sides. On the Verizon’s model they are both at the top sides of the casing.

The reason for the movement of the antenna breaks is to accommodate different frequencies of the different mobile technologies. This “iPhone 4S” appears to have a slot for a SIM card, suggesting that at a minimum it will support the GSM standard like the original AT&T iPhone 4. It is believed the iPhone 5 will support both GSM and CDMA, but we haven’t heard anything definitive about the band support for this iPhone 4S.

Also, of note, the mute switch and volume switches are on the same side of this casing, just like the iPhone 4.

The bottom portion of the frame is shown here. As noted by iFixIt’s Scott Head, what’s most interesting about this part as compared to the iPhone 4 part, is the lack of any defined “Home Button” area. The corresponding iPhone 4 part shows a cut-out area for the Home Button. It’s hard to draw an conclusions from this, but there has been a lot of speculation that Apple could be changing the Home Button area on the iPhone 5.

There still may be some confusion in the parts supply chain about what pieces are intended for what devices, but iPatchiPods’ source does believe that these mid-frames are intended for the cheaper revision of the iPhone 4.

10 Things We’d Like to See in the iPad 3

The Apple iPad 3 rumour mill continues in full swing in the wake of the launch of the new iPhone. Despite the phenomenal success of the iPad 1 and 2, all tech fanatics can see that there is more to come from the iPad; it is in no way a finished product.

iPad Developement

So what are the 10 things we’d like to see in the iPad 3 when it does finally launch? We’ve listed these below.

1) Stereo Speakers
The sound on the iPad 2 was widely derided as poor, with many Smartphones such as the Sony A860, S760 and E460 arguably having better sound quality. The introduction of better stereo sound will be a great addition to the iPad 3.

2) Faster, Stronger iPad 3
With more apps than we know what to do with, social media and web browsing, it is common to be multi-tasking with our iPads these days. If the iPad 3 can be beefed up – maybe to 64GB of storage as standard (as opposed to the 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPad 2) 4G standard – it will make the world’s favourite tablet work faster. Could we even ask for a 128GB upgrade?

3) 3G for Free
The extras that Apple charge for a 3G model may have to be reviewed for the iPad 3 amid increased competition from the likes of Sony, BlackBerry and Samsung. We live in a digital world where the internet is always needed, wherever we are. As a portable device surely the iPad 3 should come with 3G as standard?

4) Less Glare on the iPad 3 screen
The iPad is still arguably slickest when it comes to navigation and touch screen functionality, but the screen can offer a fair amount of glare when used out and about. The ability to switch to Kindle-style viewing could be one option, but may not be practical when using particular apps or browsing websites, so why not just create a better anti-glare screen?

5) USB
Just add one. It’s that simple!

6) Flash
A bugbear for many when it comes to using the Apple iPad and something Apple should certainly look at in their third instalment. Flash is a necessary application many websites and certain files and applications require in order to view them – the BlackBerry Playbook can handle Flash and if the iPad is serious about becoming a business tool it needs to iron out these issues now.

7) Greater iCloud Synchronicity
While Apple have made some headway with the iCloud, the ability to sync everything up and access it via the iCloud is now more important than ever. The ability to sync up our iPhones, iPads and Mac Books to the iPad via the cloud is a must, as well as the ability to sync up with PCs and other non-Apple products to the iCloud, too.

We’re not quite sure how, or what exactly it would involve (Apple are the experts at telling the consumer what they want), but enhanced iCloud synchronicity on the new iPad – in some shape or form – would be great, and a clear marker for future technology. Perhaps cutting the reliance of the iCloud on iTunes and the App Store as user interfaces could work?

8) An A6 Processor
This has been rumoured for a few months now and the adoption of an A6 processor could do much to boost the Apple iPad 3 in the eyes of gamers and app developers. If the iPad 3 does have an A6 processor it could lead to the development of a quad-core chip within the new device. What does that mean exactly? In short better graphics and crisper, cleaner viewing!

9) A Better Camera
Own the iPad 2? Taken any photographs with it? Don’t worry, you are not alone; Apple customers are far more likely to take shots with their iPhone than they are with their iPad. The introduction of a camera was a big feature of the iPad 2, primarily because it meant you could Skype, but when it came to actual photography, the rear-facing camera is not great. But a few simple upgrades could make the iPad 3 the iPad device that is fully embraced by photographers.

10) Price
We all appreciate the fact that the new gizmos, hardware and designs cost a lot to implement, but there is a recession on Apple and thanks to faster, cheaper processors and the advances of the laptop market, technology enthusiasts have become accustomed to having more and paying less when it comes to new tech. Apple need to be wary of the increased competition, too, notably from the Kindle Fire. So please, pretty please, don’t put the price of the iPad 3 up too much!

Anything we’ve missed off this iPad 3 wishlist? Share your thoughts and comments on what you’d like included in the Apple iPad 3 below.
